What is Atlas?
Measurement network, a network of small distributed devices (+8000 probes, goal 10k) coverage 6% of all networks worldwide (April 2015), see https://atlas.ripe.net/results/maps/network-coverage/
7000 concurrent measurements, 2500 results per second
- ping measurements (try: ping google.com in terminal)
- connections with results are send over ssl (secure); all measurement data is transferred in a secure way
Why are you gathering data?
To understand how the internet works, and identify problems on a global scale. On a local scale, the data helps network operators to troubleshoot issues with their network.

What should we do with the data?
Use it! The use cases are limited only by creativity - examples of visualisations that are based on Atlas data:

Data provides one view on the state of the Internet.
Ping is a tool to check if another node of the network is connected.
Anycast is a way that a service can be distributed over the internet, using one IP address and serving the client to the "closest" machine.
